Not all the water sources in the backcountry need to be treated or filtered, but it’s not always easy to tell the difference with the naked eye.
We used to carry a heavy gravity feed system that worked well for shorter hikes where we would set up a base camp. When we started hiking loops and thru-hikes we needed to come up with something lightweight and convenient. Our solution was to use individual in-line filters from Sawyer Products.
In this video we share with you our families strategy for water filtration for camping, backpacking, or hiking. This is how we do it, and a a few things to watch out for.
Check out the Sawyer MINI Water Filtration System at Enwild:
The ultra-lightweight (2.0 oz) and tremendously versatile Sawyer MINI Water Filtration System is ideal for ounce-counting outdoor adventurers. The 0.1 micron filter is effective against bacteria, protozoa, giardia and cryptosporidium.

Clean drinking water is an incredibly important consideration for any trip into the backcountry. Streams, ponds, and other freshwater bodies may look and even taste clean while in fact being host to a myriad of bacteria, parasites, and other pathogens that can be a serious – sometimes, even fatal – problem when you’re hundreds of miles away from civilization.
That’s why a durable, reliable, simple, and efficient water filter is an indispensable tool in any survival kit.
But when you start shopping for a good filter or purifier, you’ll quickly find that there are a lot of different products out there. That’s why we put together this guide to explain key treatment method differences and to share our personal favorite products. We’ve spent many hours researching these tools, so we hope you find this information helpful.
Our top picks for this year include everything from ultralight bottle filters and chemical drops to pumps and large-quantity gravity filters. Given how important a clean source of hydration is, there’s no excuse not to have one in your pack,

In my constant search to photograph backcountry wildlife, I rely so much on the backpacking and outdoor gear that I carry with me. Having clean, drinkable water is crucial to any type of outdoor recreation, but it’s something we don’t think about and take for granted. In this week’s video I will discuss filtering water in the backcountry, the different types of water filters you have available to use, the pros and cons of each type and some tips to help ensure you have safe, drinkable water in the backcountry.
Many people carry large amounts of water with them on their nature outings. This is great, but it can also add a lot of weight to your pack and once you’re out, you’re out. There are many benefits to using water filters, knowing what exactly they’re filtering and being familiar with the water sources in the area you’re exploring or passing through. I’ll cover all of this information in this video.
If you’re interested in what other backpacking gear I use, check out my other video where I review my sleep system (link below), and stay tuned in the coming weeks as I upload additional videos revolving around other backpacking gear that I regularly use.
Thanks so much for following along, I appreciate all the kind words and honest feedback. Have a wonderful week, and we’ll see you next Sunday!
